Pink Floyd é uma banda de rock inglesa do século XX famosa pelas suas composições de rock clássico harmónico, pelo seu estilo progressivo e pelos espectáculos ao vivo extremamente elaborados. A origem do nome "Pink Floyd" deve-se à admiração do fundador Syd Barrett pela arte dos músicos Pink Anderson e Floyd Council, do blues.
É um dos grupos mais influentes na história do rock, além de um dos mais bem sucedidos, tendo vendido aproximadamente duzentos milhões de cópias de seus álbuns sendo o grupo que mais vendeu discos de toda a historia. A produção The Dark Side of the Moon manteve-se no Top 100 Billboard de vendas durante mais de uma década e continua a ser um dos álbuns mais vendidos de todos os tempos.
Liderada pelo lendário cantor e compositor Syd Barrett, o grupo tinha um modesto sucesso na segunda metade da década de 1960 produzindo rock psicodélico. Mas o comportamento errático de Barrett forçou seus colegas de banda a afastá-lo e substituí-lo pelo guitarrista e cantor David Gilmour.
Com a saída de cena de Barrett, o baixista e vocalista Roger Waters gradualmente tornou-se o líder e principal compositor do Pink Floyd. Esta fase foi marcada pela produção de álbuns conceituais como The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) e The Wall (1979) --- álbuns que obtiveram êxito mundial, foram aclamados pela crítica especializada e figuraram em listas dos mais vendidos e populares em vários países.
Mas após o álbum, The Final Cut, (1983), o grupo separou-se. Em 1985, Waters declarou que o Pink Floyd estava extinto, mas os demais membros (agora liderados por Gilmour, mais o tecladista Rick Wright e o baterista Nick Mason), após briga judicial, retomaram a banda com o nome oficial e seguiram gravando e se apresentando - com grande sucesso comercial - e, finalmente, fecharam um acordo com Waters.
Em 2 de julho de 2005 e pela primeira vez em 24 anos, a formação mais clássica do Pink Floyd voltou a tocar, para a sua maior platéia, no concerto Live 8, em Londres (Reino Unido). Em entrevista concedida ao jornal italiano La Repubblica no dia 3 de fevereiro de 2006, Gilmour indicava o fim do Pink Floyd, declarando que o célebre grupo não produzirá qualquer novo material, tampouco voltará a se reunir novamente. Ainda assim, a possibilidade de se fazer uma apresentação similar ao Live 8 não foi descartada tanto por Gilmour ou Mason.

Pink Floyd are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative album cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music's most successful acts, the group have sold over 210 million albums worldwide including 74.5 million albums in the United States alone. Pink Floyd influenced progressive rock artists of the 1970s such as Genesis and Yes, as well as contemporary artists such as Nine Inch Nails and Dream Theater.
Pink Floyd were formed in London in 1965 when Syd Barrett moved down from Cambridge and joined The Tea Set, a group consisting of Regent Street Polytechnic architecture students Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Bob Klose. The group had moderate mainstream success and were one of the most popular bands in the London underground music scene in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by Syd Barrett. However, Barrett's erratic behaviour eventually forced his colleagues to replace him with guitarist and singer David Gilmour. After Barrett's departure, singer and bass player Roger Waters gradually became the dominant and driving force in the group by the late-1970s, until his eventual departure from the group in 1985. The band had always been popular in England, though they did not achieve true worldwide success until the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), and Animals (1977), and the rock opera The Wall (1979).
In 1985, Waters declared Pink Floyd "a spent force", but the remaining members, led by Gilmour, continued recording and touring under the name Pink Floyd. Waters sued them for the name and eventually they reached a settlement out of court, under which Gilmour, Mason and Wright would continue as Pink Floyd. They again enjoyed worldwide success with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). Waters performed with the band for the first time in 24 years on 2 July 2005 at the London Live 8 concert.
